Michael Estabrook – ANYWAY I’M BACKPACKING

I’m backpacking with three or four others
who I don’t know and we pass beneath this
high archway of rock a bright cave-like
entrance into a wide rubbly plain at the
bottom of an expansive echoing pit. The
walls are mostly boulders stacked up and
rising up all around us, rising high as you
can see. I walk out into the open plain in
the middle when suddenly one giant
boulder way up top breaks loose and begins
its drop straight down towards the earth.
The people I’m with are still protected in
the archway, but they see the boulder and
start yelling and waving their arms. “Get
out of the way! Get out of the way!” But I’m
paralyzed with fright, unable to move a
muscle, not knowing what to do about this
giant boulder dropping straight down from
the sky at me like a stone tossed by the
gods. Finally, I snap out of it run full speed
out of the way as the boulder hits the solid
rock floor with a tremendous cracking
resounding boom and bounds off towards
the other side. I stagger beneath the
archway, my companions hug me and hold
me and still I don’t know who they are.
