Fifty contributors the world (and grave) over!

Danse Macabre‘s landmark 50th issue premieres on 30 September 2011. Featuring 50 talents from four continents, Danse Macabre L will continue to bring the world to Nevada — and Nevada to the world.

Since its humble beginnings as Nevada’s first online literary magazine in 2006, Danse Macabre has featured more than 1,800 works by more than 600 writers and visual artists ranging from award-winning print veterans to new talents whose outstanding work deserves a place to shine in the non-academic literary landscape. In addition, Danse Macabre has featured works of more than 150 classical authors of the macabre and fantastic, authors whose work stands the test of time and whose work demand introduction to a new generation.

“That’s our role in the electronic literary vanguard,” says longtime Nevada resident, DM founder and editor-in-chief Adam Henry Carrière. “We’re not only publishing the work of independents like Nevada’s Ash Canyon poets, UNLV’s pop culture maven Felicia F. Campbell, UNLV business professor William Thompson, the R-J’s Vin Suprynowicz, and the late, great Elizabeth I. Riseden of Carson City, we’re also publishing writers, editors, visual artists, and even musicians from six continents. We have showcased dissident work from Iran’s Ali Abdolrezaei, who came very close to literally giving his life for poetry. We have commissioned new translations of Russian Silver Age poetry. And in the midst of all that, we publish classic authors such as Poe and Balzac and Baudelaire and Eichendorff, so we remember where we came from, so we don’t forget the giants on whose shoulders we stand.”

Danse Macabre attracts and retains readers and contributors not only by the strength of former issues but also by the persistence of Carrière’s unique vision, a skewed perspective that makes every issue a slightly bawdy Mitteleuropean kunst-und-kultur extravaganza. Bizarro author and unabashed DM fan Tom Bradley calls it “Extraordinary, never seen anything like it,” whereas poet Jennifer Reeser says Carrière is “…filling a much-needed niche in publishing.

Danse Macabre L features contemporary authors from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, India, Russia, Israel, Germany, Holland, Great Britain, and throughout the United States. Commemorating our 50th issue, we also feature classic works by Ambrose Bierce, Lord Dunsany, Thèophile Gautier, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol, E.T.A. Hoffmann, John Keats, F. Sheridan Le Fanu, Edgar Allan Poe and Thomas Preskett Prest.

Lyn Lifshin joins DM XLVII Summer Nights!

Dear friends,

We are proud to present exclusive excerpts from Lyn Lifshin’s latest effort, Last Relationships, a mesmerizing portraiture of adult sensuality wrought in Lyn’s trademark unnerving clarity.

Do sample (and shout out) these wonderful wares at http://dansemacabre.art.officelive.com/LastRelationships.aspx.

Lyn has written more than 125 books and edited 4 anthologies of women writers. Her poems have appeared in most poetry and literary magazines in the U.S.A, and her work has been included in virtually every major anthology of recent writing by women. She has been Poet in Residence at the University of Rochester, Antioch, and Colorado Mountain College. Winner of numerous awards including the Jack Kerouac Award for her book Kiss The Skin Off, Lyn is the subject of the documentary film Lyn Lifshin: Not Made of Glass. Her latest effort, CHIFFON, is from Red Mare Press.

As ever, thanks to Lyn for her continued generosity and friendship.

Toshihiro Taya FOUNTAIN

FOUNTAIN

Toshihiro Taya

Found a fountain around the mountain
Overflowing water sounded loud around
Unable to sound the profound fountain
Naiad jumped out of the water at a bound

Terrific girl’s appearance made my heart pound
And she tried to spring to me like a kitten
I was confounded down to the ground
Now the place of the fountain, I’ve forgotten

Toshihiro Taya was born in Wakayama, Japan on 17 Oct., 1958. He lived in his hometown until he was 18. Then he moved to Osaka and graduated from Osaka University (department of engineering). Later he worked at a patent attorney’s office in Osaka. He started to write English poems when he was 36.

Read more of Taya-san’s work tomorrow in dm XLVI!
